One
of the first lessons I learned when I went to work at an Architecture
firm is, the budget is everything. The budget is the bottom line.
You
can stretch it or shrink it at your whim - but I strongly suggest
you establish a hard budget number for you Ikea
Kitchen and stick to it! One of the things that nearly blew
my budget out of the water was counter tops. Every place I've
ever lived has had laminate counters, and I promised myself that
when I did my own kitchen remodel I would spring for granite or
Silestone counters.
I
almost did it too... That was until I took my own advice and stuck
to the initial budget of $13,000 for my entire project. It's easy
to get carried away when you're doing a remodeling project. It
seemed like everyone I talked to on forums was spending more than
me - some of these people were spending more on appliances and
back splash tile than my whole kitchen was going to cost.
They
were getting Wolf Ranges and Sub Zero fridges, Italian tiles and
hand crafted wood beams...I started to think I was the only person
who had a budget
for my Ikea Kitchen!
Just
because you have a hard budget number, that doesn't mean your
budget can't be fluid. You can take money from one area and apply
it to another. We did just that with our counter tops - instead
of going with granite or Silestone, we chose laminate instead,
and put the "savings" into some beautiful hardwood floors.
It turned out to be a great decision, and I could sleep at night
because I knew I wasn't blowing my budget. Here are the most important
budget tips I can give you:
