Installing Ikea Cabinets, How to Stay on Schedule

If you followed lessons one and two and think you're ready to install your new Ikea cabinets, think again! Like I keep trying to drill into you here, have a plan for what you're going to do next.

To establish a realistic schedule, the best thing I can do is give you an overview of my kitchen remodeling schedule from start to finish.

When I started my kitchen remodel, the first thing I did was to establish a realistic schedule of events and wrote down what I wanted to accomplish each weekend. The smartest move I made was to start building my cabinet boxes about 6 weeks before I began the first day of the installation.

Plan on investing some time to learn how to assemble the cabinet boxes (or take the shortcut and follow my tutorials from the members only website). Each cabinet box will take you approximately 20 minutes to assemble, that is unless its a lazy Susan or a pull out pantry.

To figure out how long it will take to build all your cabinet boxes, multiply the number of cabinet boxes you have X 30 minutes each. That number doesn't include time to install the interior hardware or drawers and doors - that will come later, so don't worry about it now.

Before I started with demolition, I made a phasing plan so I could keep half of my kitchen running (and keep people fed) while the other side was under construction. The phasing plan was to start on the first weekend and complete the demolition and installation of the cabinet boxes on the fridge/peninsula side of the kitchen.

The next weekend I tackled phase two of the project where I knocked out the sink side of the project. I took an extra day off for this phase because of having to deal with plumbing and most of the appliances too.

*If you plan to move plumbing or knockout walls, plan for it in advance. It will take you longer than you think.*

It took me two weekends total to install the Ikea cabinets and get all the appliances back in working order (except for the dishwasher and sink I had to wait for the counter top to be installed).

Over the next couple of weeks, I worked on the project at night after work to assemble the drawer boxes, install the doors and drawer fronts, get the counters and floors installed and wrap things up.

**I should note that I had the help of my Dad during the installation phases and it proved invaluable, my advice is to have at least one helper when you install**
